Hon. Pius Sampson Opoku, Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has given the assurance that the Assembly is totally committed to supporting the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project in the area.
He said the WASH project was dear to the current government, because it saw it as one of the strategies to protect public health and promote sustainable water management practices to ensure access to safe water and improve sanitation facilities in the country.
To this end, the MCE disclosed that the Assembly had decided to integrate WASH activities into the preparation of its Medium-Term Development Plan, to ensure sustainable water and sanitation services delivery throughout the Municipality.
Hon. Opoku was welcoming Participants to the Inception meeting on Technical Assistance to Government to Strengthening Safe Water Policies and Regulations in Ghana, organized in collaboration with IRC, Ghana, a Technical support group.
“We have embraced and accepted the WASH project, and shall commit resources towards its effective and efficient implementation, in order to derive maximum benefits for our people, “he said.
In his presentation, Mr. Jeremiah Atengdem, Water Expert at IRC, Ghana, said his outfit was committed to supporting government with local and national plans, to ensure safe water, good hygiene and sanitation.
This, he said, was to help achieve Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which sought to ensure access to safe water and basic sanitation for all, by the year 2030.
Mr. Atengdem indicated that the IRC, Ghana was helping Assemblies in all six districts of Ahafo region ,to implement the WASH MASTERPLAN effectively.
He said though not a statutory requirement, it was appropriate for Assemblies to incorporate the WASH Masterplan in their Medium Term Plans, for budgetary allocation, to ensure proper funding for the project.
“Just like the government financial system, the WASH project cannot be implemented without funding in the Assembly’s Medium-Term Plan, “he explained.

Participants were drawn from various stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector of the Municipality.
