The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Tano North Municipal Assembly organized a sensitization and demonstration program on 15th October 2025 at the Yamfo Market Square to commemorate Global Handwashing Day under the theme “Clean Hands are Within Reach.” The event targeted food handlers and market women to promote proper hand hygiene and food safety.
Activities included health education on hand hygiene and germ transmission, live demonstrations of the WHO 7 steps of handwashing, setting up temporary handwashing stations, and an open discussion session.
Over 80 participants took part in the program, showing great interest and pledging to set up handwashing stations at their stalls. The exercise improved awareness of hygiene practices, although challenges such as limited water supply and lack of space for hygiene stations were noted.
The team recommended providing communal handwashing facilities, ensuring regular monitoring, and sustaining continuous education through local information centres. Overall, the program was successful in promoting good hygiene and contributing to improved public health in the Yamfo community.
