In January 2026, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), conducted a human rights education and sensitisation engagement with SESBEC, a private basic school. The engagement formed part of CHRAJ’s mandate to promote and protect human rights, as well as NCCE’s civic education responsibilities.
The following human rights issues were discussed:
- Children’s rights in line with the 1992 Constitution and the Children’s Act, including the right to dignity, education, protection from abuse, and non-discrimination.
- Positive discipline and the need to avoid corporal punishment and degrading treatment.
- Teachers’ rights, including fair treatment and respect within the school setting.
- Digital and cyber safety, particularly the protection of children in the use of digital platforms.
Participants were educated on appropriate channels for reporting human rights violations, including:
- Internal school reporting structures.
- Reporting to CHRAJ for complaints involving human rights violations and administrative injustice.
- Other relevant institutions such as the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), where applicable.
Emphasis was placed on confidentiality, protection of complainants, and early reporting.
The session highlighted:
- Common sources of conflict in school settings, including student–student, student–teacher, and parent–school disputes.
- The importance of dialogue, mediation, and fair hearing in resolving conflicts.
- The role of school authorities in establishing clear grievance and disciplinary procedures.
- The use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, with CHRAJ’s mediation services explained as a peaceful and cost-effective option
