REPORT ON FUMIGATION EXERCISE AT DUAYAW NKWANTA PRISONS.

On 2nd December 2025, A comprehensive fumigation exercise was carried out at the Duayaw Nkwanta Prisons as part of measures to enhance environmental sanitation and protect the health of inmates and staff. The activity formed part of the Environmental Health Unit’s routine vector control program aimed at reducing the presence of pests such as cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, and rodents within institutional facilities.
Environmental Health Officers were present throughout the exercise to provide technical supervision and ensure that all chemical applications were done safely and in accordance with public health standards. Prior to the fumigation, a brief inspection of the facility was conducted to identify key hotspots and determine areas requiring intensive treatment.
The fumigation covered major sections of the prison, including the cell blocks, administrative offices, kitchen and dining areas, washrooms, corridors, and the surrounding compound. Inmates and officers were temporarily relocated from treated areas to prevent exposure to chemicals. Proper ventilation measures were also ensured after the application.
The exercise was completed successfully without any challenges or safety concerns. The treated areas are expected to show improved sanitary conditions and a significant reduction in pest populations in the coming days. The Environmental Health Unit recommends routine monitoring and periodic fumigation to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all occupants.
